CHAPTER 12: "IS THAT SYMBOL?"
In the short story "Araby", the main character has a crush on Mangan's sister, they have hardly talked before but everyday he waits for her to get out so he can see her. The first time that they did speak it was through a fence. The fence symbolizes the separation they have between each other, and the differences they have. The main character has very strong feelings for the girl while the girl doesn't have feelings towards the boy. The fence symbolizes that Mangan has no feelings towards the main character, meaning there is separation between the feelings of the two characters. In other words they are never having the same feelings towards each other, she's always distant from the main character. It can also represent another challenge or obstacle in the characters life.
